The PINOY SINGING SENSATION was established in the spring of 2009, in Edmonton, Canada. It is the brainchild of TONY SURTIDA, President and CEO of LE TIGRE ENTERTAINMENT PRODUCTIONS. It is a singing competition founded as a vehicle for the creative expression of the passion for singing that the Filipino, as a people, possesses. The Pinoy Singing Sensation provides a stage that otherwise would be unattainable to regular folks like you and I. The competition seeks to discover the untapped talent pool in many Filipino communities within the province.
The first PSS competition was held in September 2009 In Edmonton which saw the participation of thirty-three contestants. That year’s winner was DING LOPEZ.
In 2010, in its second year, the PSS expanded its competition platform. It 1) conducted auditions in cities outside of Edmonton (Calgary, Red Deer and Grande Prairie); and 2) Launched the Junior Edition – for contestants 6 to 16 years of age. Two champions were proclaimed last year: JASMIN REMOQUILLO (Main Edition) and WENCY CALDERON (Junior Edition) both of who are now pursuing careers as recording artists.
In Season 3 the show’s producers pushed the proverbial envelope even further: 1) Auditions were conducted in cities Alberta and Saskatchewan, 2) Video auditions became a reality; and 3) Web Voting became functional. Additionally, a pilot production for the MASTERS EDITION (for singers 35 years and above) was tested in November, with mixed results. These ground breaking developments will forever change the competition’s basic structure. The way the PSS plays out will never be the same.
2011 brought us 2 new champions – 10 year-old boy wonder DARREN ESPANTO from Calgary was our Main Edition Grand Champion, while CARL OCLARES JR. with his classy style won the Masters Edition title in November.
